In 2019 I closed my birth, newborn and family photography business of 10 years in South Africa and moved to Christchurch with my husband and two teenage sons.
I've always love stories and I've been telling birth stories with images for years. That's why the name Stories in Portrait was so meaningful to me. And the symbolic Koru shape in the O reflects my new start in a new land which I love. I am passionate about helping small businesses and I know that strategically thought out images that are easy to use and beautiful are how I can do this.
Thinking about how to start my business again in a new country has allowed me to reflect on what I need to do differently. I've realised that despite hearing over and over that "You have to sell yourself and not just your images" and "Lots of photographers take beautiful photos, people buy YOU" I was just too scared to do that. It really IS true and the more we share our story, the more potential and current clients trust in our ability to meet their needs. I am embracing this and encourage you to do the same.
Next to learning to snowboard recently, taking photos of myself and using them to promote my business is one of the bravest things I've had to do.
